Rebates Available with a GP Referral

Mental Health Care Plan

People experiencing difficulties with their emotional health are eligible for a rebate of $84.50-$124.50 for 10 individual consultations and 10 group therapy sessions with a General Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist per calendar year.

Please note:

1. This is per calendar year as opposed to being 12 months from original referral.
2. Additional sessions are no longer possible under any circumstances.

For more information regarding referral validity, please read on

Referral Validity:

For a referral to be valid, it must contain the following information:

  • the referring doctor’s name, provider number, and place of practice (address)
  • the date of referral
  • the number of sessions (maximum of 6 initially and then a further 4 upon review, totalling 10 for the calendar year)

A referral does not need to be addressed to a specific Psychologist however, referrals that are addressed to a specific Psychologist can then only be used with that Psychologist unless the patient returns to their referring doctor and has the referral readdressed.

For this purpose, we recommend addressing the referral to “CFIH Psychologist”. In doing so, our reception team will assess the client’s needs and assign them to the next available and best suited Psychologist to meet their treatment goals. For more information, please refer to the Medicare Fact sheet (Click here)

Chronic Disease and Management Plan (CDM)

Patients are eligible for a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDM) if they have a health condition that “has been (or is likely to be) present for six months or longer”. There is no list of eligible conditions.

Under this referral, a Medicare rebate of $52.95 is available for a maximum of five services per patient each calendar year. A CDM can be provided in addition to a Mental Health Care plan. A CDM can be used to access the services of Psychologists, Dietitians, and Exercise Physiologists.

Referral Preparation

If this is the first time, the patient has received a CDM, the GP needs to prepare and bill the following;

  • A GP Management Plan (GPMP) – (item 721)
  • Team Care Arrangements (TCAs) – (item 723)

If the patient had a CDM prepared in the previous year and the condition nor the allied health team has not changed, the GP only needs to prepare a review (item 732).

If the patient had a CDM prepared in the previous year and the condition has not changed but the GP wishes to review the treating team, the GP is able to bill a review twice (item 732), once under GP Management Plan (time reviewing the client) and once under the Team Care Arrangement.

Referral Validity

For a referral to be valid, it must contain the following information:

  • the referring doctor’s name, provider number, and place of practice (address)
  • the date of referral
  • the number of sessions (maximum of 5)
